Freeport – Industry Past & Present

Freeport served as Walton County‘s economic and political center for decades thanks to its proximity to the waterways that led to Pensacola and farther north to Geneva, Alabama via the Choctawhatchee River. The county’s earliest mail service was provided by a steamboat traveling from Pensacola to Freeport, and the stagecoach route from Tallahassee met up with the water route near Freeport. Wagon trains run by private companies transported most of the commodities ordered from Pensacola along the route from Freeport northeast through the Euchee Valley to Cerro Gordo on the Choctawhatchee River above Westville. After the Civil War, as Reconstruction was underway, the lumber and naval supply businesses flourished. Because of their need for water transport, mills tended to be situated near navigable waterways. The Valparaiso Development Company bought North and South Farms land in Freeport in 1918, where they grew sugar cane and sent it to Chicago.

Freeport’s Earliest Settlers

Around 1830, residents were drawn to the protected waters of LaGrange Bayou, which is located near the eastern end of Choctawhatchee Bay and the mouth of the Choctawhatchee River.

Many of the original settlers are still living in Freeport. Most household heads in the 1850 census also worked as farmers or boatmen.

Originally named Genoa, Freeport changed its name to Four Mile Landing. Because there was no toll to dock at the port area at the confluence of Four Mile Creek and LaFayette Creek during the Civil War, the location came to be known as Freeport.

Abundant Activities and Enjoyment

The Freeport area offers many ways to spend your time. In this small, yet significant area, there are:

  • Windswept Dunes Golfcourse
  • Suba divers at Valentine
  • Fishing Charters in Choctawhatchee Bay.
  • Alaqua Refuge For Animals
  • E.O.Wilson Biophilia Center

How Is The Housing?

In July 2022, Freeport home prices were up 79.2% compared to last year, selling for a median price of $459K. On average, homes in Freeport sell after 24 days on the market, compared to 20 days last year. There were 52 homes sold in July this year, down from 76 last year.

However, it’s far from being depleted. There has been no letup in the price appreciation of properties in the neighborhood during the past few years.

Takeaway

If you enjoy warm weather, the ocean, and spending time outside in the sun, the region of Freeport, Florida, in the state of Florida, is an excellent location to call home. If you’ve ever imagined what it might be like to live in paradise rather than merely visit it, Freeport is a wonderful area to contemplate settling down permanently.

Because it is surrounded by the sea on all sides, has an excellent reputation for public safety, and is located in Freeport, it is the ideal site to raise a family. The best part is that if you ever feel like changing things up, there are hundreds of other beach communities not too far away.
